FET OverBooster
Inspired by FA-1 circuit, offering versatile use as a preamp/boost
Description
FET OverBooster is our take on a discontinued Boss™ FA-1 FET Amplifier in a pedal format. The pedal could be used as a preamp/boost to drive your amp or as an overdrive. Overdrive mode enables asymmetrical soft clipping using orange LEDs. It uses NOS MC1458 (Motorola/TI) op-amp and Toshiba 2SK209-GR J-FET transistor and runs the circuit at +-9V to offer extended dynamics.
Controls
- Range - frequency response control: bass/full frequency/treble booster.
- Master - effect output level.
- Impedance - controls the signal impedance when the pickup simulator is enabled, allowing you to adjust the interaction between your guitar and the pedal and fine-tune your tone.
- Bias - adds gain and some grid, varies transistor bias point.
- PU Sim toggle - switches pickup simulator. When the PU Sim toggle is off, the buffer and the Impedance pot are also bypassed, giving you a classic effect that is sensitive to the input signal and any other pedals in your chain.
- LED brightness trimmer - placed on the PCB trimmer allows you to adjust the status LED brightness.
About the name
The name FET OverBooster is a straightforward description of what this versatile pedal does, rooted directly in its electronic design. The core of its circuit is based on a classic BOSS® FET Amplifier, which is renowned for its clean and powerful signal manipulation. We've harnessed this foundation and expanded upon it, giving the pedal two distinct modes: a pure, clean "Booster" and a smooth, low-gain "Overdrive." The name "FET OverBooster" perfectly encapsulates this dual functionality, clearly indicating what it is—a FET-based pedal that functions as both an overdrive and a boost.
